Uninterrupted rains and torrential downpours have flooded over 100 villages in Feni's Fulgazi, Parshuram, Chhagalnaiya, and Sadar Upazilas.
Locals claim that more than 50,000 people have been stranded, but official estimates put the number closer to 20,000.
The number of people taking refuge in shelters is rising, while many flood victims have complained about not receiving relief at most of these centres.
In this situation, multiple army teams have launched rescue operations in various waterlogged villages in Fulgazi Upazila.
All kinds of vehicles have been barred as the Feni-Parshuram regional road remains submerged for the third day, cutting off communication between Fulgazi and Parshuram with Feni Sadar.
Meanwhile, the water level in the Muhuri River has started to recede since Wednesday night. As of 6pm on Thursday, the water level in the Muhuri River is flowing 10.35cm below the danger level.
The embankments of the Muhuri, Kahua, and Silonia rivers have not suffered new erosion. However, water is entering through 20 previously damaged points, flooding more villages.
TWO NEWLY AFFECTED UPAZILAS
While residents of Parshuram and Fulgazi upazilas remained waterlogged until Wednesday evening, the lower areas of Chhagalnaiya and Sadar Upazilas were flooded between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon.
The district administration has said that 67 villages in Fulgazi Upazila, 27 villages in Parshuram, 12 villages in Chhagalnaiya, and five villages in Sadar are among the affected. However, locals claim the number is even higher.
Mohammad Jasim, an auto-rickshaw driver from Dakshin Sreepur village in Fulgazi Upazila, said water began entering his house from Wednesday afternoon and reached his waist.
After that, he left for a nearby madrasa shelter with his family. All the belongings in his house were destroyed by the water.
Roksana Akhter of the same area said that she moved to a nearby shelter with her children as her house was flooded.
However, no one from the government had checked on her shelter till Thursday afternoon. Her children were fed dry food from a nearby shop.
The lower areas of Chhagalnaiya and Sadar Upazilas have started to flood again since Wednesday night.
Chhagalnaiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), or Upazila Executive Officer, Subal Chakma, said: “A total of 12 villages in the Upazila have been flooded till Thursday evening, and 490 people have moved into eight shelters.
“The Upazila administration is monitoring the flood situation round the clock.”
ARMY IN AN ACTIVE ROLE
Several teams of the army have begun rescue operations in multiple waterlogged villages in Fulgazi.
A 139-member company from the 15th Support Battalion of the 33rd Infantry Division has been engaged in rescue and relief operations since Thursday afternoon.
Over a thousand packets of dry food have been transported to Fulgazi in army trucks for distribution.
Major Md Rashedul Hasan Rashed, chief of the army company, said: “The rescue and relief operations have officially started since Thursday. The army has started to rescue those stranded in remote areas via 10 speedboats.
“The army will continue to support the flood-affected population for as long as needed to rescue those trapped and distribute relief.”
BGB PROVIDES COOKED FOOD
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has provided cooked food to people stranded in flood waters in Parshuram and Fulgazi. The force has been distributing food in different places in Fulgazi since Thursday morning.
BGB Cumilla Sector Commander Colonel Rezaul Kabir distributed cooked food to over 200 people in the shelter.
