The scenic landscapes of Sylhet have been transformed into a sea of visitors as hundreds of thousands of holidayers flock to the region to enjoy the extended seven-day Eid-ul-Fitr break.
From the crystal-clear waters of Sada Pathar to the lush greenery of the tea gardens, the district is witnessing its largest tourism surge in over a year.
Since Sunday, iconic spots including Jaflong, Ratargul swamp forest, Bichanakandi, fountains, Pantumai, and Lalakhal have seen an unprecedented rush.
Tourists, seeking a reprieve from the exhaustion of urban life, were seen soaking in the natural beauty at the foothills of Meghalaya.
After a prolonged period of stagnation due to various national events and elections, the local tourism sector is finally breathing a sigh of relief.
Industry insiders are optimistic about a massive financial turnaround this season.
Approximately 1 million tourists are expected to visit Sylhet during the holiday period, generating an estimated business turnover of Tk 1 billion to Tk 1.5 billion, according to the Tour Operators Association of Sylhet (TOAS).
"The tourism sector in Sylhet hadn't really picked up for the last year and a half for various reasons," said Humayun Kabir Liton, president of TOAS.
"But with the recent rains, nature has regained its vibrant form, and we are seeing a massive response this Eid."
In Companyganj’s Sada Pathar, the influx was so high on Sunday that a shortage of tourist boats was reported.
"Sada Pathar has been buzzing since Eid day," said Hasan Mia, a local trader.
"The presence of tourists has skyrocketed after a very quiet month."
The Ratargul swamp forest is also seeing peak activity. Local resident Sona Mia noted that nearly 250 boats across three terminals are working around the clock to accommodate visitors drawn by the forest's renewed beauty following recent rainfall.
Beyond these natural attractions, the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) and Hazrat Shah Paran (R), along with city attractions like the Dhopadighirpar Walkway, remain top draws for families.
Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwoer Alam confirmed that police presence was increased to ensure the safety and security of all travellers.
As the holiday continues through Tuesday, hotel and resort owners report high occupancy, marking a triumphant return for one of Bangladesh’s premier travel destinations.
