The mercury has trickled up to a sweltering 39.8 degrees Celsius, recording the highest temperature in the country this season.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said a moderate heatwave had also been blowing over the district.

The temperature was recorded on Friday at 3pm, said Rakibul Hasan, a senior observer of the Chuadanga Meteorological Observatory.

As the sunshine grew intense with the day, by noon, the temperature climbed to 38.5 degrees Celsius but did not stop there.

Labourers suffered the most due to the scorching heat, with fasting towards the end of Ramadan making it even harder. The extreme heat left many struggling and gasping.

The city dwellers had trouble on their Eid shopping as well.

Van driver Quddus Ali was waiting for passengers at the city’s Shaheed Hasan Square.

He said, “No one wants to get into the open van. Sitting in the sun is difficult. Everyone is riding easy bikes. We are not getting passengers.”

Nazim Uddin, a resident of Daulatdiar village in Sadar Upazila, was selling ready-made clothes for small children in a van on the sidewalk.

He said, “Eid is in two or three days. No buyers have been coming since the afternoon. We cannot stay here in this sun either.”

Meteorologist Rakibul said, “Comparatively, March is hotter this year.”

“This season, the first mild heatwave started in Chuadanga on Mar 13,” he said, adding the mercury rose over the next few days as the heatwave intensified.

The highest temperature in March last year was 36.5 degrees, he said. This time, the temperature was higher and the heat scorching.

This situation may continue for another two to three days, he added.
