Bangladesh’s newly elected members of parliament are expected to be sworn in as early as Monday as preparations enter their final stages following the publication of official election results.
The Election Commission published the gazette notification for 297 lawmakers late on Friday.
Under Article 148(2A) of the Constitution, elected members must take their oath within three days of gazette publication.
Officials at the Parliament Secretariat said Monday was being treated as the likely date, although no formal announcement has yet been made.
“All preparations are being advanced with Monday in mind. However, nothing has been officially confirmed," an official said on Saturday.
Parliament Secretary Kaniz Moula said preparations had begun well in advance.
“We are ready. Whenever we are instructed, we will be able to arrange the ceremony,” she said.
Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said the oath would be administered between Monday and Tuesday, adding that the government was working to ensure a smooth transition.
Results have been declared in 297 of the 299 constituencies, according to Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed. Two seats in Chattogram and Sherpur-2 remain pending following a court order.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 209 of the 297 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami won 68. Other parties and independent candidates took the remaining seats. Turnout across the 297 constituencies was 59.44 percent.
Once the oath is administered, the president will summon the first sitting of the new parliament, as required by the Constitution.
