Two victims of an explosion at a textile factory in Rupganj, Narayanganj have succumbed to their burn injuries.

Md Abdul Hannan died at 3am on Monday and Kabir Hossain died at 9:30am while undergoing treatment, confirmed Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon of the emergency department at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Hannan, 50, was the son of Md Shafiq of Kalikapur village in Lakshmipur’s Ramganj Upazila while Kabir, 45, was the son of Md Rafiq of the Ruposhi area of Narayanganj’s Rupganj Upazila.

Both of them were security guards at Jainpuri Ashrafia Textile Mill in the Ruposhi Kazipara area of Rupganj Upazila.

On Thursday, May 1, an explosion occurred at the Jainpuri Ashrafia Textile Mill, also known as Manju Textile. Four people sustained severe burns.

Shaon said, “Kabir was undergoing treatment in the ICU [intensive care unit] of the burn institute with burns on 53 percent of his body, while Hannan had 40 percent.”

“Four security personnel of the factory were burnt in the fire. Among them, Saiful Islam, 32, is still undergoing treatment at the burn institute. He has burns on 34 percent of his body.”

After the blast, Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said: “As the factories were closed on May 1, production activities were halted, so the gas metre exploded under high pressure. The fire started from there. Four security guards were burnt.”

After the explosion, locals extinguished the fire with the help of factory workers before the Fire Service arrived, he said.

However, no case has been filed over the incident yet, said Rupganj police chief Liaquat Ali.

He told reporters on Monday afternoon, "A general diary (GD) has been filed by the police after the incident. We are following up on this matter. However, if any party wants, they can file a case over this incident."
