Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma has said New Delhi wants to work with Bangladesh’s new government in a “positive, constructive and forward-looking manner” based on mutual interest and benefit.
He made the remarks on Sunday after a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the foreign ministry.
This was the first formal meeting between the high commissioner and the new diplomatic leadership since the formation of the BNP-led government.
"I reiterated our position that we look forward to engaging with the new government in Bangladesh," Verma said.
"I conveyed that we want to strengthen our people-centric cooperation in all domains, working together in a positive, constructive and forward-looking manner, based on mutual interest and mutual benefit," he said.

The visit follows a series of high-level communications from New Delhi since the Feb 12 elections.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a congratulatory message to his Bangladeshi counterpart Tarique Rahman on Feb 13, followed by a telephone conversation.
On Feb 17, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla attended the swearing-in ceremony in Dhaka as India’s representative, delivering a personal letter from Modi to the new prime minister.
Highlighting the historical context of the relationship, Verma said: "We expressed the desire to build on our historic ties with Bangladesh and strengthen our multifaceted bilateral relations.”
“We also underlined our commitment to support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh," he added.
