An air ambulance has arrived in Dhaka to transfer Inqilab Moncho Convenor Osman Sharif Hadi, who was shot in the capital last week, to Singapore for further treatment.
The private jet, a Gulfstream G-100 being used as an air ambulance, landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11:22am on Monday, according to SM Ragib Samad, the airport's executive director.
It is expected to depart later in the day with Hadi on board.
All necessary arrangements have been made to take Hadi, a prospective independent candidate in the upcoming parliamentary election, to Singapore General Hospital, according to the Chief Advisor’s Office (CAO).
The CAO said the government had been in contact with hospitals in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia over the past two days to arrange advanced medical care. The decision to send Hadi to Singapore was taken following consultations with specialist doctors at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka and discussions with his family.
Earlier, members of the Inqilab Moncho platform said they and Hadi’s family had arranged the air ambulance through loans, but later the CAO said the state would bear all costs related to his treatment and would closely monitor the process.
Hadi was shot on Dec 12 while conducting campaign activities in the Bijoynagar area. Police say an assailant riding pillion on a motorcycle opened fire at him while he was travelling on a battery-powered rickshaw, hitting him in the head.
He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors carried out emergency surgery, before being transferred to Evercare Hospital later that night. Doctors have described his condition as extremely critical.
Hadi rose to prominence during last year’s July Uprising that toppled the Sheikh Hasina regime and the subsequent movement to the ban the Awami League and had announced plans to contest the Dhaka-8 seat as an independent candidate in the upcoming election.
