A Dhaka court has placed a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin on a two-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act after he was detained while allegedly moving “suspiciously” in a car on Minto Road.
Metropolitan Magistrate Atikur Rahman issued the order on Monday in response to the police's petition for 10 days to grill 55-year-old Enayet Karim Chowdhury in custody, according to prosecution police Sub-Inspector Jinnat Ali.
Earlier, Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman granted police permission to place him under arrest in the anti-terrorism case.
Enayet was apprehended by Ramna Model Police on Saturday and initially arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which empowers law enforcers to make arrests on reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. He was then sent to jail while police sought remand.
In the meantime, police filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act and reapplied for 10 days’ remand.
According to the application, Enayet was stopped while driving an SUV in the Minister’s Colony on Minto Road. Police said he failed to give satisfactory answers during questioning and was taken into custody, with two iPhones seized from him.
The petition said preliminary analysis of his phones revealed “important information about a conspiracy against the current government”.
Investigators also said Enayet told them he was a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin and a “contract agent” of a foreign intelligence agency. He reportedly said he came to Bangladesh to work for the formation of a caretaker or national government to replace the current administration.
Police alleged that during his stay in Dhaka since Sept 6, he held “secret meetings” with senior policymakers, political leaders and business figures.
The petition further alleged that he had been gathering information on the positions of government and opposition leaders to hand over to the foreign agency, and was involved in a wider conspiracy to instigate unrest and damage state property.
Police said the matter is under investigation and that further interrogation is needed to identify and arrest other suspects and verify Enayet's statements.
