A Chattogram court has granted bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for the Sanatani Jagaran Jote, in a case filed by BNP leader Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin almost three years ago.
Judicial Magistrate Shakhawat Hossain passed the order on Thursday after hearing the bail petition moved by defence lawyer Krishna Prasad Sharma, who said his client will not be released now because he stands trial in a murder case.
Chinmoy was in Chattogram Central Jail during the hearing.
He was the principal of Pundarik Dham in Mekhal Union of Hathazari Upazila and the district unit general secretary of ISKCON when the BNP leader sued him for alleged theft, land grabbing and vandalism.
Managers of Pundarik Dham had long been in a land dispute with the vice chairman of the BNP central committee, and his son Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, now an MP.
BNP leader Nasir filed the case against seven people, including Chinmoy, in the Chattogram Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on Jun 4, 2023.
On Jun 18 of that year, ISKCON held a press conference at the Chattogram Press Club and alleged that the father-son duo encroached upon the land of the Pundarik Dham temple.
Later, they also sued them.
Helal, however, denied the allegation at that time and claimed they had bought the land, instead.
There are five other cases against Chinmoy, including for alleged sedition, murder, vandalism, and assault on police.
Chinmoy was arrested in Dhaka in connection with a sedition case filed in the port city on Oct 31, 2024, following the July Uprising.
A Chattogram court rejected his bail plea after his arrest on Nov 25, leading to violent clashes between his followers, law enforcers and lawyers on the court premises.
At one stage of the clash, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, was hacked to death near the court premises.
On Jan 19 this year, Chinmoy and 38 others were indicted over the murder.
