Police have arrested five people, including a police officer and a journalist, allegedly over robbing 1.69kg in Munshiganj’s Gazaria.

Superintendent of Police Menhajul Alam said the arrests were made in Dhaka and Manikganj on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Those detained were identified as: SI Aktaruzzaman Munshi, microbus driver Zakir Hossain, a journalist identified only as Ramzan, another man named Ramzan Ali, and jewellery shop owner Ismail Hossain.

Police have recovered around 1.11kg of gold ornaments, Tk 1.35 million, and a microbus along with police uniforms, handcuffs and a walkie-talkie.

According to officer Menhajul, on Dec 7, several men dressed in police uniforms boarded a Chattogram-bound bus from Dhaka and handcuffed two brothers who are jewellery traders.

He added that they were taken off the bus and forced into a microbus, after which the robbers took the 1.69kg of gold ornaments they were carrying, along with mobile phones, cash, two ATM cards and a national ID card.

The brothers were later dumped in Kaliganj, Gazipur, with their hands and feet tied.

Following the complaint, the Detective Branch launched an investigation.

Driver Zakir and SI Aktaruzzaman were arrested first in Dhaka’s Kafrul, and information collected from them led to the arrests of the others.

One of the robbers had sold some of the gold to a jewellery shop in Mirpur, which led police to arrest the shop owner Ismail.

Menhajul says efforts are under way to arrest the remaining fugitive suspect and to recover the remaining gold ornaments.
