The Bangladeshi woman killed in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in Lebanon had gone to the Middle Eastern country for a better life just two years ago, says an official in Faridpur, the victim's birthplace.
Charbhadrasan Upazila administrator (UNO) Shuraiya Mamtaz on Friday night said they learnt the matter locally, pledging the victim’s family to help bring her body back soon.
“We will provide all possible assistance to the family to bring the corpse back to the country," she said.
The victim, identified only as Dipali, died on Wednesday at Hamra in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, where she was staying with her employer’s family, the Bangladesh Embassy said.
The UNO, mourning the death, said Dipali went to Lebanon in 2024 to make a fortune not only for her, but for the family.
Dipali's younger sister Laiju Begum said she was the fourth among two brothers and three sisters.
Attesting to the UNO’s statement over Dipali joining as a house help in 2024, Laiju said they heard about the body being kept at a local hospital morgue.
“Efforts are under way to bring the body back to the country,” she quoted officials as saying.
Dipali was the daughter of Sheikh Mofazzal alias Moka Sheikh of Purba Shalepur village in Charharirampur Union.
She had been living with her employer’s family, the embassy said, citing a neighbour.
Her employer and several of his family members also died in the attack, it added.
In a condolence message, the embassy described Dipali as a "remittance warrior".
“Local police sources confirmed that the body is currently being kept at the Rafik Hariri University Hospital morgue in Beirut.
The embassy is in constant communication with authorities to determine the condition of the remains,” the embassy said.
It expressed deep grief over the death and extended its heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family in Bangladesh.
