Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has claimed that the force has regained its image and restored internal discipline after being used as a "repressive force" during the Awami League regime.
Speaking at the Rajarbagh Police Lines on Tuesday, the third day of Police Week, the police chief acknowledged that the force had become "isolated from the people" due to political exploitation over the last 17 years.
"We have been able to regain our image from the state of being a repressive force... and our discipline is returning," he said while addressing the IGP’s Badge, Shield Parade, and awards ceremony for arms and drug recovery.
Labelling narcotics as a "major challenge" for the nation’s youth, the IGP warned that any officer found complicit in the drug trade would face stern action.
"The Bangladesh Police are working with the utmost sincerity to tackle this challenge. If any allegation of involvement with drugs is proven against any member of the force, they will not be spared," he said, adding that several members have already been brought to justice for such offences.
During his speech, the IGP paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War and those who lost their lives in the 2024 July Uprising.
He described the force as a "traditional and professional" body dedicated to ensuring public safety and crime suppression.
The IGP conferred the “Police Force Exemplary Good Service Badge-2025” upon 341 police personnel for their commendable service between March last year and February this year.
Units were also awarded for their success in recovering illegal firearms and narcotics throughout 2024.
