A national unity forged during the July Uprising must not be “destroyed”, Kamal Hossain, emeritus president of the Gono Forum, has said, calling for careful stewardship of the unity that student and political forces achieved.
He spoke at a memorial meeting in Dhaka on Monday evening, held to honour the late Gono Forum president Mostafa Mohsin Montu.
“A national unity has emerged among students, citizens and political parties through the ‘anti-fascist’ movement of July and August,” Kamal said.
“That youthful energy must now be used to build the nation, and everyone must remain alert to avoid destroying that unity; we must preserve it.”
On institutional reform, Kamal said the mass uprising had ignited public demands for change across key state institutions.
“There is no scope for delay. The interim government must move decisively to deliver on those expectations,” he added.
He also remembered Montu’s lifelong work to establish a corruption-free democracy, describing his efforts as “exemplary”.
The event was organised by Gono Forum at the auditorium of the Institutions of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).
Montu, who died on Jun 15 at Square Hospital, was a guerrilla commander in Dhaka district during the Liberation War and served as MP for Dhaka-3.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, speaking at the event, said: “My strongest memories of him [Montu] are tied to his unwavering stance on the Liberation War and democracy.
“They cause deep grief to those of us working for democracy. But his legacy offers lessons for all political workers. Montu’s soul will rest in peace when democracy returns to Bangladesh,” he added.
