The Chief Advisor’s Office (CAO) has said police will provide security for political party leaders and candidates during the parliamentary elections.

The frontline July Uprising activists will also get security, the CAO announced on Sunday.

A statement from the CAO said a clear guideline will be issued to ensure the security of political leaders and candidates during their movements, at their offices and homes, and while meeting the public.

The guideline will also instruct ways to ensure cybersecurity for leaders and candidates, the notice said.

The notice comes two days after the shooting of Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi. The attack on Hadi has sparked fear among political leaders and candidates ahead of the parliamentary elections. Political leaders interpreted the attack as a manifestation of ongoing "conspiracy" against the election.

The call for improving the overall law and order situation has been renewed.

The CAO said the attackers of Hadi have been identified, and law enforcers are after them. The motorcycle used during the attack has also been seized, the notice said.

The CAO confirmed that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been alerted and photos and other information on the assailants have been supplied to immigration check posts. The notice said the assailants were located several times but could not be arrested, for they kept changing their position.

The travel history of the key suspect is with police, the CAO said. He travelled abroad more than once over the last several years with the identity of an IT businessman. He last travelled to Singapore on Jul 21.

Several other suspects are also under surveillance, the CAO said.

Hadi is an independent election hopeful in the Dhaka-8 constituency. He was travelling in an electric rickshaw when the suspects moving on a motorcycle shot him.

Hadi’s condition showed signs of improving, doctors said.
