The Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS) has burnt an effigy of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's Advisor Fazlur Rahman at Dhaka University campus to protest what they described as "insulting" remarks about the July Uprising.

The protests took place at the Raju Memorial Sculpture on the campus on Sunday evening.

BGCS Member Secretary Zahid Ahsan said at the demonstration that Fazlur Rahman, in an attempt to demean the July Uprising, spoke in the same manner as Hasina [on Saturday]. He referred to those who carried out the July Uprising as "Razakars" (a term for collaborators with the Pakistani military in 1971) and "dark forces”.

He added that they do not consider those who speak in the same tone as the Awami League to be their allies. He noted that this was not the first time Fazlur had made such comments, yet no disciplinary action had been taken against him by his party.

Zahid stated that although a show-cause notice was issued today, he was unsure of the next steps. He concluded by saying that both the BNP and ousted premier Sheikh Hasina seem to believe that the protestors are "children of Razakars".

Following the protest, Fazlur’s effigy was burnt near the Raju Sculpture.

Additionally, the Anti-discrimination Student Movement held an effigy-burning event for Fazlur at the Shahbagh intersection around 7:30pm.
