Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has ordered the expunging of “indecent and obscene” remarks from an Opposition lawmaker’s budget speech in parliament.
During Tuesday’s general debate on the 2026–27 budget, Jamaat-e-Islami Nilphamari-1 MP Md Abdus Sattar used the terms “sieve” and “needle” while describing exchanges between the government and the Opposition.
The speaker immediately objected and cautioned him.
“Please, be careful when speaking in parliament. We don’t want any unpleasant or obscene words to be spoken in the House," he said.
“There are some obscene words in your speech. They have been expunged," added the speaker
The Bangla proverb about the sieve calling out the needle's hole is equivalent to the English idiom “the pot calling the kettle black” -- both expressions criticising hypocrisy.
In parliamentary procedure, “expunging” refers to the removal of words or statements from the official record, rendering them not part of Parliament’s formal proceedings.
Earlier in his speech, Sattar objected to several aspects of the proposed budget and said high inflation would affect the daily commodities market.
He said the burden of indirect taxes on common people would increase due to the “ambitious” revenue collection target.
