A mild to moderate heatwave is sweeping across three divisions and four districts, but the weather may cool in some regions from Sunday, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) says.
The Dhaka, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and the Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Barishal and Patuakhali districts are baking in the sweltering heat, the BMD said on Sunday.
Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana said, “The heatwave could be felt yesterday, and it’s still here today. But it will ease quite a lot in some places today. The possibility of rain is next to none. Overall, the weather will be quite pleasant during Eid.”
Meteorologists classify a temperature range between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius as a mild heatwave and 38-40 degrees Celsius as a moderate heatwave. If temperatures rise to 40-42 degrees Celsius, it is termed a severe heatwave. Readings above 42 degrees Celsius are classified as an extreme heatwave.
The weather is likely to remain dry with temporary partly cloudy skies over the next 24 hours from 9am Sunday, according to the regular bulletin.
The daytime temperatures could drop while nighttime temperatures could rise across the country.
Temperatures throughout the day may remain unchanged while rising 1-2 degrees Celsius at night over the 24 hours from Monday 9am, the BMD forecast says.
Over the 24 hours from 9am Tuesday, the weather is likely to remain mainly dry with occasional partly cloudy skies, though a couple of places in the Sylhet Division could experience temporary gusty winds along with lightning and thundershowers.
Over this period, the temperatures through the day may drop by a bit while remaining unchanged at night.
The BMD forecast no significant changes to weather over the following five days.
Jashore recorded the highest temperature, at 39.4 degrees Celsius, in the country over the past 24 hours, while Rajshahi registered the lowest, 16.8 degrees Celsius.
