The pressure of homebound travellers and vehicles has increased on the Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways in Gazipur as people begin leaving for their village homes ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
On Tuesday, police and other law-enforcing agencies were active at several points to prevent gridlock, but traffic moved slowly in some areas.
Workers and people from different professions began leaving Gazipur from Monday night after garment factories started closing for the Eid holidays, according to Nawjor Highway Police Station's Inspector Sawgat Alam.
“As a result, crowds of vehicles and homebound people were seen at different points on the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways,” he said.
“That rush continued until 4am on Tuesday. It eased somewhat afterwards, but pressure began building again from the morning.”
He noted that most garment factories would close after noon on Tuesday, which could further intensify traffic pressure.

However, he said severe congestion and hardship were less likely this time as factories were going on holiday in phases.
Sawgat also said police had taken additional measures to keep Eid travel smooth, with a large number of police and other law enforcement personnel deployed on different stretches of the highways.
On Tuesday morning, vehicles were seen moving slowly at Tongi, College Gate and Chandana Chowrasta on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.
Traffic pressure also increased at Chandra Trimor and nearby areas on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway, slowing movement from the Walton factory area on the Nabinagar-Chandra highway to Chandra and its surrounding areas.

In Gazipur city, a number of empty buses were seen parked in long rows on the western side of Chandana Chowrasta and in the Peyara Bagan area on the Bhogra Bypass.
That has narrowed the road and disrupted the movement of passenger buses and other vehicles.
A flyover in the Chandana Chowrasta area had been opened on Friday morning for Dhaka-bound vehicles, but it was shut again on Monday night for repair work, increasing pressure on Dhaka-bound traffic in the area.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Traffic ADC Amrita Sutradhar said the Dhaka-bound flyover would be reopened once repair work was completed by Tuesday noon.
