A judicial inquiry will be conducted into the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, according to Chief Advsior’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
Speaking outside the State Guest House Jamuna on Saturday, he confirmed that the decision was made during a meeting led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
“A number of decisions were taken at the meeting,” he said. “The first decision concerns [Friday’s] incident. You all know that an outrageous attack took place on Nur. He is unwell and receiving treatment.”
Shafiqul also noted that Nazmul Hasan, leader of the student wing of Gono Odhikar Parishad, was attacked during the same incident.
He has sustained critical injuries, as has Rashed Khan, he added. “They are saying around 50 people were injured.”
The judicial probe will be led by a High Court justice, he confirmed. Details on the terms of reference and membership of the panel will be announced later.
Shafiqul added that the meeting also decided on political consultations to be held on Sunday.
Yunus will meet the BNP at 3pm, Jamaat at 4:30pm and the NCP at 6pm to discuss the current situation and the election.
\Shafiqul said the chief advisor phoned Nur to inquire about his condition. “Initially, Nur’s wife answered the call. The chief advisor conveyed his sympathy to Nur and the other injured individuals, assuring them of receiving the best medical treatment possible.”
He added that a medical board had already been formed for Nur, and instructions had been issued to ensure that the injured were provided with the finest treatment in the country.
“If needed, arrangements will be made for the treatment of any injured person abroad.”
On Friday night, Nur and other party leaders were seriously injured in Kakrail when they were beaten by joint forces.
Five members of Gono Odhikar Parishad, including Nur, remain in treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
DMCH Director Md Asaduzzaman said Nur sustained a head injury and a fractured nose, which led to significant bleeding.
