Mayor claims 80% of Chattogram city cleared of waterlogging

Some low-lying neighbourhoods still remain submerged after heavy rain

Floodwater has receded from around 80 percent of Chattogram city, Mayor Shahadat Hossain said, though some low-lying areas remain inundated.

After inspecting several flood-hit neighbourhoods on Friday, he said work was under way to identify the causes of slow drainage and remove remaining obstacles.

Waterlogging began across parts of the city from Monday night amid five days of very heavy rain this week, with record rainfall on Tuesday submerging several areas.

Fresh areas went underwater on Wednesday, leaving most of the city waterlogged.

Some areas remained flooded through Thursday, with water beginning to recede from midday.

Parts of Chandgaon, Mohora, Halishahar, Patenga, Sholoshahar and Agrabad were still under water on Friday.

The Patenga Met Office recorded 154.8mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to 3pm.

Shahadat, accompanied by Chattogram-11 MP Ershad Ullah, visited Chandgaon Hajirpool, Chandgaon Residential Area, Balurtal, Ananya Residential Area and Shamsherpara.

They distributed relief among affected families and spoke to residents about the ongoing drainage work.

The two also reviewed areas where water remained trapped, discussed barriers to drainage and sought residents' views on possible solutions.

The mayor said, “Some low-lying areas still have standing water. We're working with local residents to pinpoint why the water isn't draining faster there.”

He said the Chattogram City Corporation was working continuously to clear drainage blockages and expected the remaining floodwater to recede soon.

Ershad said authorities were coordinating with the city corporation, local representatives and residents to resolve the situation, adding that government assistance for affected families would continue.

The Patenga weather office had earlier recorded 1,022mm of rainfall over 96 hours between 9pm on Jul 5 and 9pm on Jul 9.
