Dhaka has seen 110mm of rain in the 27 hours from 6am on Sunday to 9am on Monday.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has warned of another day of heavy rain alongside waterlogging in several parts of the capital.

A BMD heavy rainfall warning on Monday said that, due to the influence of active monsoon winds, heavy to very heavy rain may occur at places in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions for the 24 hours from 11am on Monday.

Places in the Dhaka metropolitan area may see waterlogging due to the rain, it added.

Previously, the BMD had recorded 82mm of rain from 6am to noon on Sunday. The rain triggered waterlogging in many parts of Dhaka. Roads were damaged, and potholes formed in many places. Pedestrians suffered throughout the day as they waded through the water.

Meteorologist Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik said on Monday, “Due to heavy rain, temporary waterlogging may occur in some places in the Dhaka metropolis.

“The intensity of rainfall will be low from today to Jul 15. However, the intensity of rainfall may increase again due to the active monsoon.”

The forecaster also issued a warning for the country's inland river ports from 9am to 6pm on Monday. It said that there may be rain or thunderstorms accompanied by temporary gusty or squally south-southeasterly winds at speeds of 45 to 60kph over the regions of Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Faridpur, Kushtia, Jashore, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar and Sylhet.

Accordingly, the river ports in these areas have been asked to hoist local cautionary signal No. 1.

The regular BMD weather bulletin said that the axis of the monsoon trough runs to Assam through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and the central parts of Bangladesh, with an associated trough extending to the north Bay of Bengal.

The monsoon is active over Bangladesh and is moderate over the north Bay, it added.

Under the influence of the active monsoon, light to moderate rain or thundershowers with gusty winds are likely to occur in most places in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and many parts of the Khulna Division from 9am on Monday.

Along with this, moderately heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur in some parts of the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

During this time, the daytime temperature may decrease slightly across the country, while the nighttime temperature may remain largely unchanged.

Nilphamari’s Sayedpur recorded the highest temperature in the country in the 24 hours to 6 am on Monday at 35.5 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature was 22.8 degrees Celsius in Bandarban.

Chattogram’s Ambagan saw the most rain in the period at 174mm. The BMD also recorded 163mm in Chattogram, 148mm in Sandwip, 115mm in Bandarban, 104mm in Faridpur, 97mm in Dhaka, and 96mm in Sitakunda.
