A memorial has been announced at the University of South Florida campus for two Bangladeshi PhD students, Zamil Ahamed Limon and Nahida Sultana Bristy, who were brutally killed in the United States.
University President Moez Limayem announced the initiative on Friday during a memorial service held in front of a tree at Crescent Hill, adjacent to the campus.
He said the university will honour Limon and Bristy at the scheduled commencement next week, adding that a permanent monument will be erected on campus to ensure their memories endure.
During the service, faculty and students offered floral tributes before portraits of the pair placed on either side of the tree.
Leaders of the Bangladesh Students Association at the University of South Florida also spoke at the gathering.
Limon, a graduate of Khulna University, was pursuing a PhD in geography, environmental science and policy at the university.
Bristy, a former student of Noakhali Science and Technology University, was studying chemical engineering.
The two had been missing since Apr 16, when they were last seen.
After their phones were found switched off and contact was lost, family members alerted campus police.
On Apr 24, police recovered Limon’s mutilated body near a local bridge.
Authorities later informed Bristy’s family that she had also been killed.
Following the discovery of Limon’s body, his roommate Hisham Abugharbieh was arrested the same day, facing two counts of premeditated murder.
During the search for Bristy, human remains were recovered from a nearby water body.
After forensic examination, the family was informed on Friday that the remains belonged to her.
Limon’s younger brother Zubaer Ahmed told a Florida news outlet from Bangladesh that the couple had been in a relationship for four and a half years.
They had planned to marry upon completing their higher education with the blessing of both families, but their lives were tragically cut short before they could do so.
