Bangladesh and Malaysia have held a bilateral meeting to explore avenues for greater cooperation, with manpower export and trade and investment expansion topping the agenda.
The talks took place on Monday morning at the Perdana Putra -- the imposing office of the Malaysian prime minister in Putrajaya, the planned federal administrative capital just outside Kuala Lumpur, Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman said.
Sumon Mahmud, bdnews24.com's special correspondent travelling with the premier, said Tarique Rahman and his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim led their respective delegations at the meeting.
The discussions covered expansion of trade and investment, energy cooperation, the halal economy, worker recruitment, the semiconductor industry, agriculture, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
Tarique's side included Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit, Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir, Finance Advisor Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Education Advisor Mahdi Amin, and Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam.
The two leaders sat for a one on one private meeting before joining the formal delegation level talks when they were joined by their senior aides at the stunning administrative city.
Earlier, the Bangladeshi prime minister was accorded a warm reception upon his arrival at the venue.
Following the bilateral session, the two premiers held a formal joint press conference to outline the decisions taken during their talks.
Tarique, his wife Zubaida Rahman, and the travelling delegation are to attend a luncheon at the Malaysian premier's official residence, where local artists will perform cultural pieces in both Malay and Bengali.
Tarique and Zubaida arrived at Putrajaya via a motorcade from the Shangri-La hotel at 8:30am, reaching the premier's office at 9am.
The Malaysian prime minister and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail warmly greeted the Bangladesh premier and his spouse upon their arrival.
A ceremonial contingent of the Malaysian Armed Forces then presented a guard of honour to Tarique as the national anthems of both countries were played.
The prime minister later inspected the guard.
Following the reception, the Bangladesh leader introduced his entourage to Ibrahim, who similarly introduced his cabinet members to the visiting prime minister.
After completing the introductory formalities, Tarique signed the visitors' book at the entrance of the building.
Along the approach road to the complex and at Putrajaya Madani Square out front, the flags of both nations flew side by side to mark the occasion.
