Dhaka South City Corporation has sealed around 100 illegal bus counters in the Syedabad Bus Terminal area on the second consecutive day of an eviction drive.

Authorities also cleared both sides of the GPO Link Road beside Baitul Mukarram Market, removing encroachments from roads and footpaths.

According to a DSCC statement, executive magistrates conducted the drives through two separate mobile courts on Thursday.

The statement said nearly 100 illegal bus counters at the Syedabad terminal were sealed, while long-standing illegal structures built on footpaths were demolished.

Earlier, a meeting held on Mar 10 at Nagar Bhaban involving DSCC, Dhaka Metropolitan Police and transport owners and workers decided to remove all illegal counters outside the terminal and allocate spaces inside in an organised manner.

Following that decision, DSCC began eviction drives in areas surrounding the Syedabad Bus Terminal on Wednesday, continuing the operation on Thursday.

In a separate drive, authorities cleared encroachments from both sides of the GPO Link Road on the southern side of Baitul Mukarram Market.

The DSCC said temporary shops and illegal structures that had occupied footpaths for a long time were removed, reopening pedestrian walkways.

The city corporation also issued an emergency public notice on Thursday to keep roads and footpaths free from encroachment.

The notice said no goods can be placed on footpaths outside shopping malls and markets under DSCC jurisdiction, directing occupiers to remove their belongings immediately.

Failure to comply will result in strict legal action, including cancellation of trade licences of the relevant shops or establishments, in accordance with existing laws.

The statement added that eviction and monitoring drives will continue regularly in the public interest.
