A complaint has been filed with police in Narail alleging that bounties were offered on social media for assaulting people who took part in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in 2024.
The written complaint was submitted to Narail Sadar Police Station at around 10:30pm on Monday by Amirul Islam Rana, member secretary of the local unit of the Students Against Discrimination Movement, police station chief Ajay Kumar Kundu said.
The complaint names 11 people as accused.
Those named include Md Mizanur Rahman Nayan, senior vice-president of the Bangabandhu National Council in Narail; Sourav Karmakar, the organisation's vice-president; Md Sajibul Islam Hridoy, a resident of Kundashi village in Lohagara upazila and a joint general secretary of the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League's Dhaka North unit; Shahadat Hossain Raihan; Iman Sikdar; former Lohagara Upazila Chhatra League joint general secretary Md Milon Jamaddar; Md Israfil; Md Sajib Chowdhury; SK Aslam; Abdullah Al Jaber Lotus; and Jubayer Sheikh.
Since the beginning of July, provocative posts have been circulating on Facebook, including offers of rewards ranging from Tk 50,000 to Tk 500,000 for attacking participants in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Amirul Islam Rana alleged that supporters of the former ruling Awami League were behind the threats.
"With July approaching, the Awami League has become desperate. From abroad or undisclosed locations, they are issuing these kinds of threats," he said.
He also alleged that false rumours had recently been spread claiming he had been attacked.
"We have sought legal remedy. We want justice, but if we do not get it, we are prepared to take further steps," he said.
Abdullah Al Jaber Lotus, one of those named in the complaint, denied the allegations.
"I do not know any of the people named in the complaint, nor do I have any contact with them," he told bdnews24.com.
"I also do not know the people who filed the complaint. Why would I spend money to have them attacked?" he said.
Police officer Kundu said law enforcers had received the complaint and would investigate before taking legal action.
