Police have recovered the throat-slit body of an Awami League leader in Ataikula, Pabna, a day after he went missing.
Mojibur Rahman, chief of Ataikula Police Station said the body was recovered around 4:30pm on Saturday from a small jungle in the Uttar Para area of Ratanpur under Bhulbaria Union.
The deceased, Abdus Shukur, 40, was a native of Ratanpur village. He served as the vice-president of Ward No. 9 Awami League in Bhulbaria Union.
Citing family members and locals, police said Shukur left his home at around 9pm on Friday. When he did not return late into the night, his family searched all likely places and contacted relatives, but were unable to find him.
On Saturday afternoon, locals spotted a throat-slit body lying inside a small jungle known as Uzirer Bagan and informed police. The body was later identified as that of Shukur.
Rumi Hossain, son of Bhulbaria Union Awami League President Abu Yunus, said Shukur had been serving as the vice-president of Ward No. 9 Awami League.
His killing has cast a shadow of grief and anger over the local community.
Officer Mojibur said the body had been sent to the Pabna General Hospital morgue for a postmortem.
However, the motive behind the killing and the identities of those responsible have not yet been determined.
He added that police have launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances of the murder and arrest those involved.
