Toll collection on the Jamuna Bridge has reached Tk 34.15 million in 24 hours as the rush of people returning to the capital following the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays intensified.
A total of 46,278 vehicles crossed the bridge between Thursday and Friday midnight, according to Syed Riaz Uddin, executive engineer at the Jamuna Bridge site office.
The data reveals a significant surge in Dhaka-bound traffic, with 30,056 vehicles heading towards the capital, generating Tk 19.84 million in tolls.
Meanwhile, 16,222 north Bengal-bound vehicles contributed Tk 14.31 million.
To manage the heavy volume, bridge authorities have deployed 18 toll booths -- nine on each side.
"We are operating 18 booths in total, including two dedicated lanes on each side for motorcycles," Riaz Uddin said, adding that the staff is working round-the-clock to ensure smooth transit.
Despite the high pressure of traffic on the Jamuna Bridge-Tangail-Dhaka highway, officials remain optimistic that the continuous operation of toll booths will prevent significant gridlocks.
