Faisal Rubel Ahmed, arrested as an "associate" of Faisal Karim Masud -- the key suspect in the murder of Sharif Osman bin Hadi -- has claimed innocence, telling a Dhaka court that he was mistaken for another man with the same name.
During a remand hearing on Wednesday, Rubel told the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam that he was “not the Kamruzzaman Rubel involved in the Hadi killing”.
“I have a job. I have no involvement in the murder. I lived in Adabor, which is why they assumed I was that Rubel.”
In response, the magistrate said: “You have not been identified as that Rubel.”
After the hearing, the court granted police three more days to question him.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Rubel, 33, in Ati Nayabazar in South Keraniganj on the night of Jan 21.
He was placed on a six-day remand the following day.
After the remand period ended, investigators produced him before the court on Wednesday, seeking a further seven days to interrogate him.
In the petition, CID investigator and Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdus Qadir Bhuiyan of the Dhaka Metro (East) unit said the suspect had provided “significant information” during the initial interrogation and that more time was needed to verify those details.
Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favour of extended remand, saying: “The Hadi murder was not a spontaneous act. He is one of the suspects. Two mobile phones were recovered from him and sent for forensic examination.
“More information will emerge once the reports are received. A seven-day remand is necessary in the interest of justice.”
No lawyer represented Rubel at the hearing.
Hadi, convenor of the Inqilab Moncho and a prospective candidate, rose to prominence during the July Uprising and the movement to ban the Awami League.
On Dec 12, while campaigning in Bijoynagar, he was shot by attackers on a motorcycle.
Gravely wounded, Hadi was airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died on Dec 18.
Inqilab Moncho’s member secretary filed the case over Hadi’s murder.
On Jan 6, police submitted the chargesheet in the murder case accusing 17 suspects, including former Chaatra League activist Faisal, who alongside four others are on the run.
Police said Hadi's murder was “politically motivated”.
The murder was meant to disrupt the parliamentary polls and create fear among voters ahead of the polls, according to police.
Inqilab Moncho is not happy with the investigation carried out by the detectives.
