e Minister Tarique Rahman has given a directive to police officers not to consider the political identities of offenders when working to control corruption and violence.
He gave the directive on Monday morning during a guidance speech to police officials at the Shapla Conference Centre of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon.
He said, “Your role is undeniable in building a strong, accountable, lawful, and people-friendly state system. The current government is uncompromising against corruption, violence, and misrule. I said yesterday, and I have said before, that we do not want to compromise with violence and bad governance. We want to work.”
“In controlling corruption and violence, we have often seen that you face difficulties. You are pressured by political identities or political influence. I want to give you a clear message - when controlling corruption and terrorism, do not consider a person’s political identity. Whoever engages in crime should be treated as a criminal. The law must be applied equally to all. You are protectors of the law, not of any person or party. You must carry out your duties for the welfare of the state and the people.”
The prime minister said, “The relationship between the people and the police must be both lawful and humane. Alongside your other responsibilities, a significant amount of your time is spent managing political instability. This is also part of your duty.”
“The current government certainly wants to ensure the democratic political rights of the people. However, we must also ensure that no one can engage in communal disharmony or any kind of sabotage.”
On Sunday morning, the prime minister inaugurated Police Week 2026 through the annual parade at Rajarbagh Police Lines. He also addressed the “Police Welfare Parade” at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium the same day.
On the second day of Police Week, he delivered this guidance speech to senior officials, including deputy inspectors general (DIGs) and superintendents of police, at the Prime Minister’s Office.
At the beginning of the event, a documentary video on the activities of Bangladesh Police was presented.
We Must Build a Safe Bangladesh
The prime minister said, “We want to build a prosperous, self-reliant, democratic, safe, and humane Bangladesh. As citizens beyond your uniforms, I believe you will agree with me. This is not just a slogan.”
“We want to realise this aspiration, and it is possible, Allsh willing. But to achieve it successfully, what is needed is law and order, and ensuring peace and security for the people.”
He added, “Those of you present here today, and those working across the country at field level, are directly playing a role in maintaining law and order. Therefore, if you can successfully fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to you, I believe the current government will also be able to move one step closer toward establishing a safe Bangladesh.”
“We have limitations. But if we move forward according to our capabilities, we will succeed.”
Position Is Not Important, Professionalism Is
The prime minister said, “In this reality, I believe that not only certain positions, but every post in the police administration is extremely important. Therefore, professionalism in every role is essential. If officers compromise professionalism only for promotion or postings of their preference, they may gain temporary satisfaction, but I would say that is compromising professionalism.”
“My special appeal to you is this: whatever responsibility is assigned to you, perform it with seriousness. Then we will certainly be able to ensure an efficient, dynamic, and professional police administration.”
He continued, “Like in the past, no government is permanent. We are in government for five years. Likewise, no post in public administration or police administration is permanent for anyone. That is why I do not want to see today’s meeting as merely a formality.”
“Rather, let this meeting become an important moment of commitment for future guidance in maintaining law and order in the country.”
Police Must Be Sincere in Solving Problems
Tarique said, “In any country in the world, there is no alternative to an efficient, brave, honest, and impartial police administration for the success of a government. We must remember that when people face danger, they first go to the police. I believe that if police sincerely want to, many incidents can be resolved at the very beginning through legal and strategic work.”
“If confidence and trust in police activities are established, then the problems that have arisen after Aug 5, including mob violence, can easily be removed from society.”
Police Must Be People-Friendly
The prime minister said, “Following the long one-and-a-half decade anti-fascist movement and the path of the 2024 Mass Uprising, the democratic government is now established and accountable to the people and wants a police administration that is people-friendly and trusted by the people.”
“In any country, people generally consider the police administration as the mirror of the government. Therefore, if the police administration succeeds, it is effectively considered the success of the government as well.”
Government Must Fulfil Electoral Commitments
The premier said, “The government wants you to have a clear understanding of one matter: the current government is fully committed to implementing every clause and every promise of the election manifesto and the July Charter signed before the people, step by step and in letter and spirit. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind.”
“People become involved in crime for many reasons. Economic inequality is one of them. Since assuming office, the government has taken various initiatives to reduce economic inequality among different classes and professions and ensure a socio-economic safety net for citizens.”
He added, “As part of this, the government has started issuing Farmer Cards, Family Cards, and Sports Cards to empower people economically. Monthly honorarium payments have also begun for Imams, Muezzins, and religious leaders of other faiths.”
“Soon, programmes for issuing Expatriate Cards and LPG Cards will also begin, by the grace of Allah. The government’s goal is to bring every person in the state and society, regardless of party or opinion, under a state social safety net.”
He further said, “To free the country from the curse of floods and droughts, the government has already begun excavation and re-excavation of 20,000km of canals across the country through public labour. If water conservation can be ensured through canal excavation, farmers will be able to produce crops year-round according to the seasons.”
“On the other hand, canal excavation will not only create temporary employment for many people, but will also contribute to social solidarity and harmony among communities.”
