The senior judicial magistrate's court sent him to jail on Thursday, police said.

The detainee, 52-year-old Oli Ahmed, is the organising secretary of Singair Upazila's Joymontop Union chapter of the Awami League.

Oli was arrested at his home on Wednesday in the case filed by a Chhatra League leader, said Singair Police OC Aslam Hossain.

The plaintiff in the case, Tipu Sultan, the office secretary of the local Chhatra League unit, said Oli Ahmed would regularly post and share materials insulting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as well as propaganda of Hifazat on his personal Facebook account.

"He was informed about it more than once but he did not listen."

Sultan said he was outraged after Oli shared another anti-government post by the Islamist group on his Facebook page on Wednesday and decided to start a case under the Digital Security Act.

Reazul Islam, president of Joymontop Union Awami League, said that Oli Ahmed has been campaigning for the post of general secretary in the committee of the union Awami League unit by printing posters and festoons announcing his candidature.

He claimed that Oli, a "dedicated worker of the party", could not use his mobile phone properly.
