Three sentenced to death for killing Rajshahi University teacher

A Rajshahi court has sentenced three people to death for murdering Rajshahi University teacher AKM Shafiul Islam in 2014.

The court announced the verdict on Monday.

The convicts who received the death penalty are Ariful Islam Manik, Sabuj Sheikh and Abdus Samad Pintu. The court acquitted eight others named in the case.

All the accused, except Sabuj who was on the run, were present in the court to hear the verdict.

Professor Shafiul was hacked to death in front of his house at Choddopie adjacent to Rajshahi University on Nov 15, 2014, said Public Prosecutor Entazul Haque Babu, citing the case dossier.

Later, the RU authorities filed a murder case at the Motihar Police Station accusing some unidentified people.

On Nov 23 that year, RAB arrested six people, including Pintu, the husband of a university official. Later, Detective Police detained Pintu's wife Nasrin Akhter Reshma who gave confessional statements before the court after her arrest.

On Nov 30, 2015, the investigation officer of the case submitted a charge sheet against 11 suspects, including the district's BNP unit Joint General Secretary Anwar Hossain Ujjal, his business partner Pintu and Reshma.
