Three die in explosion at National Fan factory in Tongi

At least three people died and 30 others were injured in an explosion at the National Fan factory in Gazipur’s Tongi on Tuesday.

The explosion occurred in the heating chamber inside the factory around 11am on Tuesday, said Md Ashikur Rahman, an officer at the Tongi Fire Service Station.

The victims, workers of the factory’s paint section, were taken to the Shahid Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital.

At least 35 persons were brought to the hospital and two of them were dead, said Rayeya Binte Reaz, a physician at the hospital.

No fewer than 10 victims were admitted to the hospital and eight others were referred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the doctor said.

Others were given first aid, she added.

The two brought dead to the hospital were identified as Shamsul Haque, 20, from Netrakona and Azizul Islam, 18, from Mymensingh.

Another worker, Lal Chan, 25, died at the Dhaka hospital, Ujjal Sarker, a workers’ leader at the factory, told bdnews24.com.

Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir said they have formed a five-member committee to investigate the incident.

The district administration gave the families of the dead Tk 20,000 each, he added.
