Serniabat succeeds Air Marshal Abu Esrar, the defence ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
The new Air Force chief will take over on Jun 12 for three years.
He joined Bangladesh Air Force Academy in 1980 and was commissioned in the force in 1982.
He had the unique opportunity of commanding three Fighter Squadrons of BAF.
The BAF website also describes him as the pioneer squadron commander of the coveted MiG-29 Fighter Squadron.
Serniabat has attended a number of courses at home and abroad.
Besides Defence Services Command and Staff College in Bangladesh, he studied at the Royal Malaysian Armed Forces Staff College in Malaysia and National Defence University in China.
He had also served as a director of different departments at Air Headquarters and commander of BAF Base Bir Shreshthha Matiur Rahman.
