Two die in Sylhet as villagers clash

Villagers clashed over the ownership of a mosque land in Sylhet on Saturday, killing two people and injuring at least 20 others.

They hailed from two villages—Mitremohol and Bohor— and were involved in the fierce fight over the ownership of mosque land in Salutika Bazar, said Gowainghat Police Station OC Delowar Hossain quoting villagers.

The dead with bullet wounds were identified as Monai Mian, son of Abdul Jalil, and Rubel Ahmed, son of Azizul Islam. Both were villagers of Mitremohol.

The injured were admitted to the Sylhet Osmani Medical Collage Hospital.

Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

The local member of parliament sat with the rival villagers to settle the issue. But the meeting ended up in violent clashes. At one stage, the villagers fought with weapons and sticks, according to the police.
