BSMMU gets Prof Kanak Kanti Barua as new vice-chancellor

The government has appointed Prof Kanak Kanti Barua, a neurosurgeon, as the new vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University or BSMUU.

Barua, the chairman of the Neurosurgery Department and dean of the Surgery Department, told bdnws24.com that he was informed about the appointment by the health ministry on Thursday.

A leader of the professionals’ body supporting the ruling Awami League, Prof Barua will replace Prof Kamrul Hasan Khan.

He will remain in the post for three years after taking office on Mar 24, when Prof Hasan ends his term.

Prof Barua finished his MBBS from Dhaka Medical College in 1977 and holds the position of president of Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Also, he is the first vice-president of Bangladesh Medical Association and Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad.
