Twenty-six Bangladeshis including crew die in Kathmandu plane crash: Official

The government counted 26 Bangladeshis, including the four crew members, among the dead after the US-Bangla plane crash, an embassy official has said.

A day after Bangladesh’s worst airline disaster, the Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu released the list of the casualties.

It showed that 32 Bangladeshi passengers were on board, 22 of them died in the crash and 10 others were in hospital care.

The document confirmed the deaths of pilot Abid Sultan, co-pilot Prithula Rashid and crew members Khwaja Hussain Md Shafey and Sharmeen Akhter Nabila, clearing confusion over the fate of the airline officials.

Bangladesh Embassy’s First Secretary Asit Baran Sarker said a total of 49 people died in the crash.

“The 10 survivors are in critical condition,” he told bdnews24.com on Tuesday.

The US-Bangla plane crashed in cloudy weather on Monday as it flew in to land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

The aircraft clipped the fence of the runway and burst into flames with 71 people on board.

US-Bangla Airlines spokesman Kamrul Islam told the media in Dhaka earlier on Tuesday that eight of the Bangladeshi survivors were being treated at the Kathmandu Medical College Hospital.

They are Emrana Kabir Hashi, Shahreen Ahmed, Sheikh Rashed Rubayat, Almun Nahar Annie, Mehedi Hasan, Saiyada Kamrunnahar Swarna, Md Kabir Hossain and Md Shahin Bepari.

The two others, Eakub Ali and Md Rezwanul Haque are under treatment at the NORVIC Hospital and OM Hospital respectively, he added.

The deceased Bangladeshis have been identified as Foysal Ahmed, Alifuzzaman, Bilkis Ara, Begum Hurun Nahar Bilquis Banu, Akhtara Begum, Nazia Afrin Chowdhury, Md Rokibul Hasan, Md Hasan Imam, Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Akhi Moni, Meenhaz Bin Nasir, Faruk Hossain Priol and his minor daughter Priyonmoyee Tamarra, Md Motiur Rahman, SM Mahmudur Rahman, Tahira Tanvin Shashi Reza, Pias Roy, Umme Salma, Md Nuruz Zaman, Rafiq Zaman, his wife Sanzida Huque and their son Aniruddha Zaman.

“The bodies will be brought back after all the medical procedures, including forensic reports are completed. US-Bangla Airlines is ready to provide all kinds of supports to the survivors,” said US-Bangla spokesman Islam.

He added a team of US-Bangla officials, including the CEO, reached Kathmandu Tuesday morning and are involved in the crash probe.
