On being asked in Parliament on Sunday, the minister said from January 2014 to December 2017, a total of 17,289 cases of women and child rapes were recorded throughout the country.

The total number of victims in those cases was 17,389, of which 13,861 were women and 3,528 children.

He said during the period, 673 people were convicted and sentenced in 3,430 cases disposed of by the courts with 17 death penalties, 80 life imprisonments and 576 in different prison terms.

Replying to another question, Kamal said the government made requests to a number of foreign countries like the USA and Canada not to grant citizenship to the self-proclaimed killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

He also said a task force is working to bring back the convicted fugitives.

"Necessary measures have been taken to circulate their pictures and other personal information at different international airports through the Interpol in an effort to bring the killers back and to implement the verdict," the home minister said.

The government has also expropriated almost 32 acres of land belonging to sacked army officers Khandaker Abdur Rashid and Rashed Chowdhury, according to the home minister.
