Rupa rape and murder: Four sentenced to death, one to 7 years prison

A Tangail court has sentenced four people to death and another to seven years in prison over the 2017 rape and murder of college student Zakia Sultana Rupa.

Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Abul Mansur Miah announced the verdict on Monday.

Chhowa Paribahan bus driver Habib Miah, 45, and his helpers Shamim, 26, Akram, 35, and Jahangir Alam, 19, were sentenced to death.

Chhowa Paribahan Supervisor Sobur Ali, 55, was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Rupa’s body was found on Aug 25 last year beside the Tangail-Myemnsingh Highway in Modhupur Upazila.

She studied at Ideal Law College in Dhaka and had been working in the marketing division of a company. Her area of coverage was Mymensingh Sadar.

She was on her way to her workplace after taking the teachers' registration test in Bogra on that day.

According to the case dossier, she was gang-raped and then brutally killed on a moving bus of Chhowa Paribahan.

The trial began on Jan 31. Arguments ended on Feb 5 and the judge set Feb 12 for the verdict.
