Man-made Rohingya tragedy can be resolved: British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has termed the Rohingya crisis a “man-made tragedy” and said this could be resolved with the 'right political will, tolerance and cooperation' from all those involved.

He made the comment in a statement following his arrival in Dhaka on Friday afternoon.

The British foreign office said after Bangladesh, he would be visiting Burma and then Thailand.

“I want to see and hear for myself the terrible things these people have been through, and I will be talking to State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and other regional leaders about how we can work together to resolve this appalling crisis,” he was quoted as saying in the statement.

“The plight of the Rohingya and the suffering they have had to endure is one of the most shocking humanitarian disasters of our time,” he said.

“This is a man-made tragedy that could be resolved with the right political will, tolerance and cooperation from all those involved.”

This is the first official visit to Bangladesh by a British foreign secretary in 10 years.

Johnson met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after his arrival in Dhaka.

On Friday night, he would meet his Bangladesh counterpart Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali.

He will visit Cox’s Bazar on Saturday.
