“His passing away represents an immeasurable loss for the country and leaves a void,” he said in a condolence message.

The 71-year-old former minister died early on Sunday at Labaid Hospital in Dhaka. He had been suffering from cancer.

“I had the occasion to meet Mr. Suranjit Sengupta, who was a close associate of Bangabandhu, on a number of occasions,” Shringla recalled.

“The last time was just a few days ago at a Saraswati Puja function in the Parliament premises, which he attended despite his illness”.

The envoy also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Awami League leader’s wife Dr. Joya Sengupta and other members of his family, his friends and well wishers.
