Police fire to foil muggers at Tikatuli in Dhaka, one dead

Within hours of a daylight robbery at Dhaka's Kadamtali, muggers have made another attempt to rob a man travelling on a rickshaw at Tikatuli in the capital.

But police opened fire when three muggers tried to steal from the man on the rickshaw on Sunday.
 
Two muggers fled but one of them, Md Akash, 30, was hit, said Wari Police Station OC Tapan Chandra Saha.
 
Akash later died in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
 
This incident occurred within a few hours after a businessman returning home with a bank loan was shot in the leg by five to six muggers on three motorcycles at Kadamtali.
 
The businessman said the muggers had made off with Tk 500,000, which he had withdrawn from the BRAC Bank’s Shyampur branch as loan.
 
Both incidents were within the jurisdiction of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Wari Division.
 
Three hours later, another group of muggers attacked a banker who was carrying Tk 78,000 on a rickshaw in front of the Abhisar Cinema Hall at Tikatuli and tried robbing him.
 
Wari police OC Saha told bdnews24.com the muggers exploded bombs when a police patrol rushed to intervene after hearing the banker’s scream for help.
 
"As the policemen opened fire, one of the muggers was shot in both his legs. Two other muggers fled," he said.
 
Saha said Akash died at the DMCH around 5pm.
 
The police official said two handmade bombs and Tk 28,000 looted from the banker was recovered from Akash.
 
The two muggers made off with the rest of the money looted, Saha suspected.
