Detective Branch (DB) have taken reserved seat MP and Mohila Awami League General Secretary Pinu Khan’s son Bakhtiar Alam Rony on a four-day remand.

According to police, auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Ali and rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim were shot dead in a random firing from a black Land Cruiser Prado around 1:45am on Apr 14.

Hakim’s mother Monowara Begum filed a case at Ramna Police Station against unidentified people on Apr 15.

The detectives were tasked with the investigation on May 24.

DB Sub-Inspector Deepak Kumar said Rony and Imran Fakir, the driver of his car, were arrested on May 31 for their alleged link to the killing.

Rony admitted to police that he fired from his licensed gun, Kumar said.

“We are also sure about this. But we have appealed to grill him as he refused to admit it in court,” he said.

According to the DB sub-inspector, Fakir gave a confessional statement in court on June 1 and the court granted the detectives four days to grill Rony.

But Rony was taken to Razarbagh Police Lines Hospital on the first day of the grilling as he felt unwell.

He was then taken to the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute, and transferred to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University later.

His interrogation resumed on Tuesday after his condition improved, Kumar said.

“There were three more persons on Rony’s black SUV that night. We are trying to find and detain them,” he said.

The detective said they had spotted Rony using technology and that they had a video of the incident.

Rony’s mother MP Khan, however, said he had an alibi.

“Is some drunk able to fire aimlessly when he is with his family?” she asked.

She said she had ‘full respect’ for law.

Mohammad Babu, the owner of the garage of the auto-rickshaw that victim Hakim was driving, told  bdnews24.com that the investigation officer phoned him two weeks ago.

“I have links with Hakim’s mother. We live in same Madhyabagh area,” he said.

Asked if he received any threat from Rony’s family, he said no one contacted him or Hakim’s mother.
