They had fled across the border to Bangladesh amid heavy fighting between the Myanmar military and rebel insurgents in Rakhine
Zafar is currently a Director General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A career diplomat, he belongs to the 10th batch of BCS foreign affairs cadre.
He had earlier served at the Bangladesh embassy in The Hague and as the Deputy High Commission in Karachi.
He also served as Consul General at the Consulate General in Los Angeles and Dubai.
A graduate from the Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University in Dhaka, Zafar also worked as a scientific officer in the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute before joining the foreign ministry.
He has a post-graduate diploma in international relations from the International Institute of Public Administration (IIAP), France, and MBA from Preston University, USA.
