Language activist Nadera Begum passes away

The Language Movement activist served in jail from 1949 to 1951.

She died of old age complications at her residence in the capital’s Uttara at dawn on Friday.

She was 84 years old.

Nadera Begum was a student of the Dhaka University when the Language Movement began in 1948. She served in prison from 1949 to 1951 for actively participating in the movement. Before going to prison, she was involved in the agitation to enhance the wages of the Class IV staff of the university.

Nadera Behum had followed her elder brother martyred intellectual Munir Chowdhury to the movement. She was the third of the 14 children of Afia Begum and Abdul Halim Choudhury.

Late Kabir Chowdhury and Ferdousi Mojumder are also her siblings.

Nadera Begum a former teacher for Dhaka University’s English Department was wife of former Finance Secretary and Chief Auditor Gulam Kibria.

Nadera Begum was buried in the graveyard at Uttara Sector-4.
