PM gives away film awards

Film stars receive the awards as the National Film Day is being observed for the first time in the country.

Dhaka, Apr 3 (bdnews24.com) � Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday handed over the 'National Film Awards-2010' to the winners as the National Film Day is being observed for the first time in the country.
While distributing prizes she recalled the day when Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman brought a bill in then East Pakistan provincial assembly to establish a film development corporation.
"In 1957, the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was the minister for East Pakistan's industry, trade, labour, anti corruption and rural assistance. At that time, he realised the importance of establishing a national institution for the development of films," she said.
"He tabled the 'East Pakistan Film Development Organisation' bill in the provincial assembly. The bill got the final nod on this day (Apr 3) at the assembly and FDC was established," she reminisced.
The government has decided to observe Apr 3 as National Film Day from this year. The National Film Award 2010 was held at the city's Bangabandhu International Conference Centre
Sakib Khan and Purnima received the National Film Award for best male and female actor for 2010.
In all 25 selected for this year's National Film Award. Actor Anwar Hossain was given Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the country's film industry.
The prime minister said the FDC, established during the Pakistan period, has been playing the central role in the development of the country's film industry over the past six decades. "We are observing Apr 3 as the 'National Film Day' from this year to pay remember the father of the nation's prudent step."
However, she said FDC has become an ineffective institute due to corruption and inefficiency. "The film industry faced a new problem -- video piracy."
Hasina said her government formed a special task force and monitoring cell to prevent making of 'obscene' films and stop video piracy.
"As a result, video piracy has been stopped. We have ensured implementation of the copyright act. The making and exhibition of 'obscene' films have stopped," she said.
The prime minister also mentioned that her government has formulated the film society (registration) act along with the Pornography Control Act-2011.
The law bans production, preservation, transportation and marketing of any kind of pornographic material.
The country's film industry has started to get its long lost glory back, she remarked.
The prime minister said her government has taken initiatives to build 'Bangabandhu Film City'.
She hoped that Bangladesh would be able to do well in the field of cinemas
She said she was glad to be present among the film starts and congratulated the winners of National Film Awards-2010.
Terming film an 'extraordinary invention' of the 20th century, she said, "When we hear the word film it touches our heart, makes us happy. Cinema has become a strong media worldwide."
The history of film spans over 125 years. The cinema was invented during the 1890s, during the industrial revolution. Most films before 1930 were silent.
The modern era in Bangladeshi cinema started in 1956 with the making of 'Mukh O Mukhosh' (The Face and the Mask). It was the first Bengali language feature film to be made in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan).
WINNERS OF 2010 FILM AWARD
'Gohine Shobdo', produced by Faridur Reza Sagar and directed by Khalid Mahmud Mithu, has been adjudged the best film. Mithu received the best director award for this movie.
Shujeyo Shyam Ghosh has been awarded the best music director, Imdadul Haque Khokon the best choreographer and M A Alamgir and Romana the best male and female actor in a supporting role.
S I Tutul and Shammi Akhter were awarded as the best male and female singers, Sheikh Saadi Khan the best composer and Kabir Bakul the best lyricist.
Mizu Ahmed received the best actor award in a negative role, Afzal Sharif for the best comic role, Prarthana Fardin Dighi the best child artiste, Zakir Hossain Raju for the best story and dialogues, Nargis Akter for screenplay, Hasan Ahmed for cinematography, Kazi Selim for sound recording, Mozibur Rahman Dulu for editing, Mohiuddin Faruk for art direction, Abdur Rahman for make-up and Bibi Rasel for costume designing.
