Dhaka, Dec 28 (bdnews24.com) – A Dhaka court has summoned Bangla national daily Jugantor editor and publisher Salma Islam and two others to appear before it on Feb 23 in six separate defamation cases.
Metropolitan magistrate A G M Al Masud passed the order on Wednesday in response to six cases against Salma Islam, Jugantor executive editor Saiful Islam and reporter Helal Uddin filed by six persons the same day, counsel of the plaintiffs' advocate Ashraful Haque George told bdnews24.com.
The plaintiffs are managing director of National Warehouse Dr Mohammad Habib Ullah, manager of Dhaka Warehouse Mohammad Ashraf Hossain, director of M/s H Kabir and Company Limited Suvas Saha, managing director of Eastern Diplomatic Services Limited Towfique Uddin Ahmed, managing director of M/s Saber Traders Alok Das and director of Tosbon (Pvt) Limited Suvas Chandra Bosh.
According to the case statement, the newspaper published four separate reports on Dec 21, 22, 26 and 27, headlined 'Govt losing billions of Taka in revenue', 'NBR inactive', 'Irregularities in duty-free import of alcohol', and 'Alcohol worth Tk 5 billion imported showing value of Tk 8.1 million'.
The plaintiffs in their cases claimed that their organisations have licences to import alcohol. They import the alcohol through legal process complying with all rules and regulations to sell those to diplomats and VIPs as per the Geneva Convention.
They also alleged in the cases that the reports were published only to tarnish the image of their organisations.
