Dr Milon an 'unforgettable person' in history: president

The 21st death anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon whose killing had spearheaded a 1990 mass movement against former dictator HM Ershad is being commemorated.

Dhaka, Nov 27 (bdnews24.com) – The 21st death anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon whose killing had spearheaded a 1990 mass movement against former dictator HM Ershad is being commemorated.
Violent protests following his death had forced Ershad to step down on Dec 6, 1990.
Then joint secretary general of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Dr Milon was shot dead by criminals allegedly backed by Ershad on November 27, 1990 on the Dhaka University campus.
Various groups are observing the day on Sunday.
President Zillur Rahman and prime minister Sheikh Hasina have recalled the day and paid respect to Milon.
The president said his sacrifice gave a new and dynamic dimension to the movement against tyranny and helped pave the way for democracy.
"Dr Milon is an unforgettable person in the history of Bangladesh's movement for democracy," Zillur said.
Hasina paid respect and prayed for the departed soul of Milon.
Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League's student wing, started the day by placing wreaths at his grave on the Dhaka Medical College Hospital premises.
Shaheed Dr Milon Sangsad paid respect to the martyr.
The Sangsad will hold a discussion at 3pm at the Shaheed Milon Chattar at Dhaka University.
