Jahangirnagar University, Aug 2 (bdnews24.com) – Two organisations on Monday brought out a procession and held rallies to observe their previous protest rape at Jahangirnagar University.
Earlier on Aug 2, 1999 the then Chhatra League general secretary of the university Jashim Uddin Manik and his followers were thrown out of campus by students for raping a number of women.
Different organisations have observed the day since then when they rose up in protest against such injustice.
Jahangirnagar Sangiskritik Jote, a cultural organisation's university unit, has taken up a three-day programme to mark the day.
It will organise discussions in the evenings besides observing different programmes.
Progressive Students' Alliance and Sangskritik Jote jointly brought out a procession from the university's social science faculty building at around 1.15pm on Monday.
The procession ended at Bat-tala after marching through different roads of the campus including a going around the Central Shaheed Minar, the new arts building and the registrar building.
The university unit's students' union president Rajib Karmakar, general secretary Hasan Akther Sina, Socialist Students' Front president Nasir Uddin Prince and Sangskritik Jote president Mahi Mahfuz spoke at the meeting at Bat-tala.
The speakers alleged that the university administration was responsible for the recent Chhatra League clashes at the university.
They also said that the university authorities had been trying to save the drama department chairman Sanwar Hossain Sani and international relations department teacher Abdullah Hel Kafi who have been accused for sexually harassing female teachers and students.
Recently the university syndicate gave a farcical decision regarding the allegations against the two.
