Mymensing, August 4 (BDNEWS) – The 140 megawatt Mymensingh power plant has been shutdown Wednesday as a result of rivalry between Lahmeyer International Palli Power Services ltd (LIPS) and Rural Power Company Limited (RPCL).
All the 97 local and foreign staffs including the security personnel of LIPS, the operational management company, left the plant.
Amidst a conflict among shareholders of the RPCL, a team of RPCL and Rural Electrification Board (REB) officials went to the plant Wednesday afternoon, but were obstructed.
Later the team entered into the power plant with the help of two platoons of police and other law enforcing agencies, led by two magistrates provided by the district administration.
As a result of this coercion, all the staffs of LIPS left the plant shutting it down immediately.
Major (retd) Firoz Kabir, assistant general Manager (Admin) of LIPS, told BDNEWS: We signed an agreement on June 6, 2004 for generation, maintenance and safety of the plant for next 23 years. But they took position in the plant within a year.
However, RPCL managing director Zahirul Haq, who went to the plant Wednesday, said: We came to visit the plant as it was not running properly.
The plant remained closed till sending this report Thursday.
