The body of Bangladeshi national Depali Begum, killed in an Israeli air strike in Lebanon, has arrived at her ancestral home in Faridpur.
Nearly a month after her death, her casket arrived at Shalepur, a remote village surrounded by the Padma River in Charbhadrasan, around 7:30am on Friday.
A pall of gloom descended on the area as relatives broke down in tears.
The family said the flight carrying Depali reached Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport at 11:20pm on Thursday.
Her father Sheikh Mofazzal, elder brother Sheikh Obaidullah, and younger sister Laizu Akter received the remains at the airport.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed was present to hand over the body to the family members.
Depali was critically injured during an Israeli air raid on a building in the Lebanese capital on Apr 8.
She later died while undergoing treatment at Rafik Hariri University Hospital.
Charbhadrasan Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Suraiya Momtaz said after completing airport formalities, the family left for their village in a government-provided ambulance at night.
They reached Moinot Ghat in the capital’s Dohar Upazila around 3:30am.
At daybreak, the coffin was transported by trawler to Adarchar Ghat in Charbhadrasan and finally taken to the house in Purba Shalepur Munshirchar by a horse-drawn carriage.
A large crowd of relatives and locals gathered at the house as the news spread.
After a long wait, family members were overwhelmed with emotion upon finally receiving her remains.
State Minister Shama said they pray for the salvation of Depali’s soul and the government remains committed to providing further necessary support to the family.
“After such a long wait, being able to see my sister one last time is our only consolation,” said Depali’s younger sister Laizu.
Md Ashiq Siddiqui, assistant director of Faridpur Expatriate Welfare Centre, said Tk 35,000 was handed over at the airport for burial expenses, with an additional Tk 300,000 to be provided later under government support.
Depali will be buried at the family graveyard after Namza-e-Janaza or funeral prayers.
